impromptu - a quilt along

Who is up for a summer quilt along?

Me. I am.

Because I don't like to do these things on my own, I'm going to strongly encourage you to hang out with me. Ok?

We're going to start on June 1st. This gives you enough time to decide which fabrics you want to use, and to get your chickens in order.

You will need -

the impromptu pattern by Rachel Griffiths. Available here.
1 layer cake (there's a ton of them at Fat Quarter Shop) or use 42 10" squares cut from your stash (I'm tryig to decide whether to do that or use a layer cake - I just can't decide)
6.5 yards of a solid/background fabric
the usual quilting supplies (rotary cutter, mat etc)

y'all up for it?

It's a fun and simple pattern and it makes a BIG quilt. I'm going to bet that most of you have quilts that sit on the couch, on the kids' beds, in the dog bed (or is that just me?), and you might not have a quilt that actually fits on your bed. I have quilts that ALMOST fit my bed, they do the job, but it'd be nice to have one that actually fits properly. This little baby is just the ticket. It ends up at 90.5" square. I'm going to have a little chat with some of my sponsors and see if we can get some prizes and stuff to encourage you along the journey.

There's a flickr group, so go join that right now and start thinking about fabrics.

I have never done a quilt along. How does it work?

Could i get away with half a layer cake and a charm pack? Riley Blake layer cakes are only one of each print.

I'm in! My first quilt along :) Although I think I will make it smaller than the monster size it comes in LOL.

Oh my gosh ~ I was part of a swap and I've got at least 42 (if not more) Enchino 10" squares that would be perfect for this sew along. Got to get in gear and get things done so I can sew along with you.

Pretty darn cute! I 'think' I'm in. I'm just finishing up a QAL with Sunflower and following along made me keep up! I know I have a layer cake...I just have to get the 7yds of background...

Two firsts in one swoop, joining a quilt a long and starting a Flicker account, make that three, I have nearly completed my first QAYG quilt.

Hmm I have the pattern and several layer cakes - maybe this is the push I need to actually make the quilt!

Kelly said...

Ah this could be the quilt I have been looking for to use my stash of Type. Just need to see if I can afford that much backing fabric.

Katy Cameron said...

Hmm, this might push me to use up the collection of layer cakes gathering dust...

Oh yikes...I already have this pattern. I will be completely tied up for 2 weeks in June. I'd love to participate...I'm almost "in".

Yes, yes, yes.....I just finished a quilt-a-long with the Sewing Loft and Patchwork Posse and have five others going and various stages.

Always time to squeeze in another one. Just ordered the pdf pattern.

Ohh, I should join, b/c I already have this in progress. I've been working on other things though b/c my choice for background doesn't really excite me very much.. BUT it's for a gift and I think it will go with the decor of the recipient. I LOVE the pattern. :)

I held out for, oh, nearly ten hours! But I've just downloaded the pattern from Fat Quarter Shop, I've got a few layer cakes (maybe this in Marmalade?) and some plain white cotton sheets to use as background. So I'm in!

I am so down with this. I have had a Quilt Blocks by Ellen Luckett Baker Layer Cake laying around for awhile because I couldn't decide what would do it justice. Thank you! Just can't decide if I like white or grey or maybe even some really pale pink for the background... any ideas?

In! I'm going to use some beautiful Kaffe Fassett solids, I think it'll be amazing.

Nancy, Near Philadelphia said...

Okay, I just ordered the pattern. But I'm not a layer cake kind of gal. Am thinking of some half-yards of Kaffe, et al. and a pale periwinkle background......

I would love to Katy! But I never made a quilt before so this might be a bit ambitious. I should have asked you at camp but what do you think would be good for someone who wants to make a quilt to start with?

Newbie Jen said...

Oh Bless You! I have had a layer cake of Birds and Berries just sitting around waiting for something to happen to it. I just ordered my pattern. See you on June 1st!

I have bought the pattern I shall be using this as a bit of a stash buster so need to have good rummage. So will join you on the 1st June. Looking forward to it, should be fun.

Lesley Charlesworth said...

I've got the pattern and ordered some fabric, so I'm game. I'm not sure how a quiltalong works though. Do you talk us through it, or is it just a case of sharing pictures of progress and finished quilts?

Katherine said...

Just bought the pattern, Katy. Looks like I'm in! ;o)

Andrea Turner said...

Ordered my pattern earlier this week, but happened to notice that the web address for the link says "pre-order". Are they still on pre-order? If so, do you know when the patterns will ship? I want to make sure I have it in time to start the QAL.

I'm in :-)

I've been looking for a way to use up some of my fat quarter stash and 4 inch square stash, so this just might be the thing. I've loved this pattern since it was introduced!

Just what I needed to make that pattern I've had forever into a quilt! :)

I bought the pattern a few months ago...I am in! I need to make four baby quilts in the next few months, so I am considering making 9 blocks and seeing how that looks.

I hope it's alright if I follow along. I am working on a T-Shirt quilt for my niece who graduated from LMU a couple of weeks ago. It's her graduation gift from me. I have to finish it fast, but since it's a full size quilt, there isn't anything fast about it. Thank you for the invite.

I have a summersville layer cake and the impromptu pattern. I think they will work well for this quilt along.

This sounds like fun..I just ordered my pattern and I think I will use a Riley Blake layer cake that I have had here "super star" now to look for my background. Glad to be a part of it.

Scrapbook-ChickADoodle said...

Sounds like fun, but like a few others, not sure how it works. How long does it last, how often do we work on it, do you do a tut on part of it & then we do that part...or ???
I'd like to say I'm in ....
